YHC establishes food pantry for College, community

by Steve Esser

Young Harris, GA (10/21/2025) — Young Harris College is setting up a campus Food Pantry that will serve both the student population and the local community.

"We are so excited to be able to offer this resource, not only to our Mountain Lions here at YHC, but for the local community as well," said Rev. Adam Daniels, YHC Campus Chaplain. "Our YHC Campus Cupboard Food Pantry opened in September, and we have been serving our campus and our community."

The Campus Cupboard Food Pantry was made possible through a grant YHC received for $15,000. The grant - in addition to the Food Pantry - will allow the College to set up a service scholarship for students who will work to maintain the Campus Cupboard, and establish connections with other local non-profits. They will also undergo a program of experiential learning where they visit and learn from other community-based service organizations by going "behind the scenes" and speaking to leaders.

"The pantry will be located on campus and open to the students throughout the semester," Daniels said. "We will also have monthly community distribution dates for the local area."

Community food distribution dates, which will open at 5:30 p.m., will be scheduled throughout the year. The next one is Nov. 12. The Campus Cupboard is located at the Hesed House on campus, on Duckworth Street. Additional distribution dates will be scheduled and announced for 2026.

"The Campus Cupboard gives us an opportunity to not only provide for students, but also reach out to the local community in support," Daniels said. "Our students will receive the immediate benefit of the food pantry, but then also see where that support will help others."
