Young Harris College's Campus Gate Art Gallery hosts Justin Archer exhibit
Young Harris, GA (09/25/2026) — Young Harris College's Campus Gate Art Gallery will present Justin Archer's "Stratified Histories," a sculptor's look at fragility and beauty found in the human experience.
Stratified Histories will open Oct. 1, with a reception at 6 p.m. in the gallery and will be on display until Oct. 29. The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.
"My sculptural practice engages emerging technologies and historic wood carving practices to consider paradoxes in the human experience," said Archer, who lives with his wife, Laura, in Atlanta. "Rather than viewing technology and craft as oppositional forces, I see this perceived dichotomy as an opportunity. Central to my work are life-size figures, often hand-carved in basswood or walnut. While moments of the figures are carefully realized, digital abstractions and fragmentation express bodies in moments of transformation."
Archer, who received his MFA in 2016 from the University of North Texas and is currently a Professor of Sculpture in Atlanta, has had exhibits at Love Field Airport in Dallas, Cross-Pollination Art Lab and Mason Fine Art Gallery in Atlanta, the Louisiana Biennial, R02 Gallery in Dallas, Miami University in Ohio, and many other galleries nationally.
"My current research project, Stratified Histories, reimagines classical sculptures from the Carlos Museum through digital scans translated into wood and bronze," Archer said. "By reconstructing and reinterpreting these fractured forms, I explore the ways historical artifacts embody an ongoing relationship to memory and material. The process of creating from digital echoes of the past reflects on our own efforts to restore and find coherence within the fragmented. Providing opportunity for potential to emerge from loss and exploring what continuity might exist between the ancient and the contemporary."
