Young Harris College Studies Cherry Farm Property

by Jenna Thomas

Young Harris, GA (03/16/2024) — Young Harris College students have incredible opportunities every day, whether in or outside the classroom. A recent donation of farm property near the College has provided a perfect chance for a new class.

The "Introduction to Museum Studies" class, where students learn about museum best practices, was made possible by the new Cherry Farm Property given to the college last year.

"The Cherry Farm gave the college the idea to start the class," said Jackie Bruen, Library Associate of Special Collections and instructor of the class. "The class meets both on campus and at the Cherry Farm to enable the students to not only learn abstractly about these best practices but to also get a real hands-on experience."

The Cherry Farm property was donated to Young Harris College from the Cherry family in Hayesville in August 2023. The farm, located on more than 10 acres, includes a farmhouse and barn. The barn is rumored to be the oldest structure still standing in Clay County.

"This class is really neat," said Georgia Miller, a senior at YHC. "It has been a great hands-on and unique experience with the new property we were given. It's unlike anything I've done at Young Harris College so far!"

The class teaches students about the basics of museum best practices. Students have begun cataloging the house on the property, including furniture, photographs, houseware, books, and other household items dating back to the 1930s up to present day.

The students will also be working on an exhibit design later in the semester using the items from the house in hopes of presenting it at Young Harris College's Undergraduate Research Day April 11.
