YHC hosts scholarship luncheon to thank donors
Young Harris, GA (04/10/2025) — Scholarships are a critical part of a college student's experience, providing the ability to attend classes and earn a degree. Each year, Young Harris College hosts a luncheon to honor both the donors and the student recipients here at YHC.
"I am so grateful for the students, donors, and scholarships here at Young Harris College," said Dr. John Wells, YHC President, kicking off the Annual Scholarship Luncheon on March 28 at the Rollins Campus Center. "As you know, almost 100% of our students are on some type of scholarship or receive financial aid here at Young Harris College. And that wouldn't be possible without your generous donations."
Two alums and a current student spoke at the luncheon, and Sarah Carver performed, a senior flautist in YHC's Music program.
"Once I came to the Enchanted Valley, I committed on the spot," said Will Ranieri, a senior majoring in marketing and minoring in sports studies. "I knew this is where I wanted to be."
Matthew Kammerer, Class of 2011, echoed that sentiment: "I couldn't possibly imagine the ripple effects that YHC would have on my life. The scholarships I received weren't just financial assistance, it was the community saying, 'We believe in you, we're investing in you.' "
Lydia Sartain, Class of 1979, a native of Blairsville, nine-year District Attorney for Georgia Northeastern Judicial Court, and member of the Young Harris College Board of Trustees, spoke to the audience.
"For you students, this is an opportunity here at Young Harris College to open the world like you never would have imagined," she said. "And for you, the donors, by supporting the College, this is the opportunity you provide for these students."
Vice President for Advancement Mark Dotson, Class of 1988, spoke at the closing of the luncheon.
"This is one of the best events we have on campus every year, one of my favorites," said Dotson. "It is always special when our students have the opportunity to meet and get to know their scholarship donors. We want to thank everyone who attended: our student speakers, performers, and guest speakers. I'm already looking forward to next year's luncheon."
The annual Scholarship Luncheon highlights the generosity of YHC donors and provides a special afternoon for donors and scholarship recipients to connect.
