YHC dusts off dance shoes for Big Dance

by Steve Esser

Young Harris, GA (03/27/2026) — From alumni to students, everyone was cutting a rug Saturday for Young Harris College's Big Dance, as YHC's annual event returned to campus in 2026.

The first Big Dance happened in 2011 and has been a highlight for YHC ever since.

"We wanted to offer a fun event for the community that would, at the same time, benefit our students directly," said Mark Dotson, vice president for Advancement. "It brings people on campus who may have never been here before, and hopefully, it will encourage them to attend other events like our fine arts performances or any of our athletics competitions. But, ultimately, it's all about community: This event supports local students, students whom attendees may know personally."

The Big Dance 2026 was a huge success, with more than 400 people in attendance and raising more than $22,000 for student scholarships. The money raised supports local YHC students through the Bob and Carol Head Local Scholarship Campaign.

Music was provided by the Swinging Medallions, who were booked by YHC Board of Trustees member, Ray and Mary Lynn Lambert. And, in addition to an evening of music and dancing at YHC's Harp Recreation and Commencement Center, there was also a table-decorating contest, with many tables designed around specific themes. The winning table, created by David and Beth Hand, featured the theme "Red Neck Yacht Club."

Events like the Big Dance can't happen without sponsors, and Bobbie Thompson, director of Development and Corporate Relations, wishes to thank this year's sponsors:
