Young Harris, GA (04/18/2024) — U.S. Rep. Buddy Carter, R-GA, is receiving Young Harris College's highest honor, the YHC Medallion, at this year's 2024 Commencement Ceremony May 4 at the College.

Carter, an alumnus of Young Harris College, Class of 1977, is being honored for his diligent service both to the College and the state of Georgia. He will also receive an honorary degree - Doctor of Humane Letters - during the May 4 ceremony.

"Young Harris College is proud to award Rep. Carter the Medallion for his extraordinary contributions," said Dr. Drew Van Horn, president of Young Harris College. "His service to the state and to this College is a testament to himself and to this College as he exemplifies all the attributes we endeavor to instill in our students here."

Born in Port Wentworth, Carter is a lifelong resident of the state of Georgia. He graduated from Young Harris College in 1977 with an associate degree, before transferring to the University of Georgia, where he earned a bachelor's degree in Pharmacy.

Carter began his career in politics in 1994 in Pooler as a member of the City Council before becoming mayor in 1996. He moved on to the Georgia House of Representatives, before being elected to the U.S. Congress as Representative of Georgia's First District in 2014.

He serves on the House Budget Committee and as Chair of the Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Environment, Manufacturing, and Critical Materials.

"Second to my roles as a husband, father, and grandfather, the greatest honor and privilege of my life has been serving the great people of Georgia's First Congressional District," Carter said. "My experience at Young Harris College helped kickstart my career and marriage, and I love cheering on the Mountain Lions in the Enchanted Valley."

His wife Amy is also an alumna of Young Harris College, graduating in 1976. The two met in Chemistry lab and have been married for 46 years, with three sons and seven grandchildren.
