YHC adds NarcX box for prescription disposal on campus

Young Harris, GA (03/28/2026) — Young Harris College has taken another important step in supporting student wellness and community safety with the installation of a new NARCX Box on campus.

The secure medication disposal unit provides students, faculty, staff, and local residents with a safe, convenient way to dispose of unused or expired prescription medications.

"NARCX boxes are a simple but powerful tool in preventing medication misuse and protecting our community," said Robbie Rich, YHC Police Chief. "By providing a secure place to dispose of unused medications, we are reducing the risk of accidental poisoning, misuse, and environmental harm."

Located in the YHC Police Department, in Manget residence hall on campus, the NARCX Box is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and is free to use. The initiative is part of the College's ongoing commitment to fostering a healthy campus environment and addressing the broader public health concerns surrounding prescription drug misuse.

The addition of the NARCX box aligns with regional and national efforts to combat the opioid crisis by limiting access to unused medications that might otherwise be diverted or improperly discarded. According to public health officials, a significant percentage of misused prescription drugs are obtained from family or friends, often from medicine cabinets.

NARCX boxes accept most prescription and over-the-counter medications, including pills, patches, and liquids. Pet medication and vitamins are also accepted. Items that are not accepted include illegal drugs, hazardous materials - like batteries, aerosol cans, sharp needles or syringes. Trash, glass, or plastic bottles, or vials are also not accepted.

"Abuse of narcotics, amphetamines, and other controlled substances is currently the fastest-growing public epidemic, nationally and worldwide," Rich said. "Having a resource like the NARCX box helps us provide a safe solution."
