Aurora Borealis lights up Rollins Planetarium in November

Young Harris, GA (10/29/2024) — Immerse yourself in the breathtaking beauty of the aurora borealis in November at "Aurora: Lights of Wonder" in November at the O. Wayne Rollins Planetarium.

This event is also a special fundraising event as all proceeds show will support scholarships for YHC students participating in the "Marvels of Peru: Science at the Equator" study away trip in May 2024. Your contribution will help make this incredible opportunity possible!

Aurora: Lights of Wonder: Thursday, Nov. 14 - 7 and 8 p.m.

View the aurora borealis as if you were experiencing it firsthand, all thanks to the innovative work of astrophotographer Kwon O Chul. This film goes beyond traditional time-lapse images, showcasing high-resolution, real-time hemispherical video captured with a specialized low-light camera system.

It reveals the intricate details, vibrant colors, and dynamic movements of the aurora in stunning clarity. Throughout the film, you'll also find insightful scientific explanations and captivating artwork that explore the legends surrounding the aurora. Filmed on location in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada, the movie highlights the rich cultural significance of this natural wonder.

No vouchers will be accepted for this show since it is an event dedicated to raising funds.

Did an Asteroid Really Kill the Dinosaurs?: Friday, Nov. 22 at 7 p.m.

This show is a part of YHC's Kids & Family Series! Did a space rock six miles wide slam into the Earth millions of years ago and wipe out a majority of all living things at that time, including the dinosaurs? Explore this impact and other cosmic collisions, which are abundant across our solar system. See the numerous craters on worlds like the Moon, Mars, and even distant Pluto.

Skies Over Georgia: Friday, Nov. 22 at 8 p.m.

Featuring a live presenter and using the planetarium's optical star projector to its fullest, this traditional star show allows audiences to explore the heavens as they appear above the mountains of north Georgia. Learn how to identify the planets and stars currently visible in the night sky, take a guided tour of the constellations and hear some of their fascinating stories.

Purchasing tickets online in advance is recommended for most shows since planetarium shows often sell out. For planetarium shows, guests are encouraged to arrive early for the best seats.

Public planetarium shows, with the exception of Cosmic Concerts, include a live-narrated "season stargazing" segment in addition to the featured full-dome program.
